An Antique PreWar set stamped as ‘Austria’. A very good Draught Horse & damaged Cart. Identified based on 2 similar items from sales in 2014. Composition Putz papier-mache draught horse is in very good to excellent condition with only minor surface loss on the tip of the left ear. It is dusty from years on display. The cart has been played with and is missing a piece at the front which is assumed to have been the kick or foot board. Harnesses are also missing, although the original chains on the horse are intact. The correct method of attaching the horse to the cart with the wire and chains is not clear.
The horse stands approximately 4 1/2″ tall and 5 1/2″ overall length. The cart is 4″ high and 7″ in length excluding the drawbar wires. Similar items include an eyelet at the front of the horse’s platform to facilitate a string to use as a pull toy. This item does not show any sign of a eye-let. Assumed to be intended as a display piece or putz item rather than a toy.
Identification is based on items similar from Elastolin / Lineol / Hausser in Germany, although both of these pieces are clearly stamped as Austria on the bottom of each. Two similar horses were sold in 2014. Other research indicates that there may have been a driver and potentially a load for the cart and fine leather harnesses to the horse.
