Money Boxes Banks

Money boxes or Coin Banks have been around for many, many years in differing formats.

Commonly known as a piggy bank, coin safe, money box, or coin bank, many retail bank businesses use them to encourage customers to save and deposit with them.

According to one source the name ‘piggy bank’ is derived from the clay or Pygg that was used to make small pots for spare coins in the 15th century. Later the pronunciation of the word Pygg, became closer to Pig and the clay pots were then shaped as Pigs essentially as a pun. Over time the term piggy bank became common use.
