Commonwealth Bank of Australia Money Box Savings Tin

A Commonwealth Bank Australia Money Box Savings Tin in good condition.

This is an earlier version of the common green/gold building money box. This is a single use tin, i.e. it does not have a method to open and reseal it. It would need a can opener or similar to access the savings, which the bank teller would do if presented for deposit. I estimate late 1950’s into 1960’s.

The tin is also embossed across all the faces with indentations that are meant to align with the doorways and windows to provide a quasi-3-dimension effect to the building facade. The top of tin has the requisite coin slot and text “A new box will be issued WITHOUT CHARGE if the contents of this box when full are placed to the credit of an account with COMMONWEALTH SAVINGS BANK OF AUSTRALIA”. All of which is kind of expected as the underlying purpose of ‘gifting’ these boxes was to encourage savings and deposits into the bank.

The lithographed building image is in good condition. The base of the tin shows some rusty scratches and the top of the tin plating has weathered from being exposed to air while the base plating which would have had less exposure on a shelf is still golden in its hue.
